This large manor house, belonging to a notable owner, who was probably called Veranius, has three phases of architectural reform and expansion that took place throughout the fourth century A.D. The mansion continued in use until the fifth century A.D.
The complex is organised into four terraces carved into the hillside that extend over an area of approximately one hectare. The main entrance to the villa is on the west flank and gives access to the north courtyard. The configuration of the spaces allows us to assume that the ceremonial route taken by visitors to the villa began at the entrance to the north courtyard where the grand loggia opened at noon was accessed, whose route led to the main representation rooms.
Virtual tour of the Roman Villa of Veranes
The collection
In addition to the museumization of the archaeological remains, the exhibition hall houses the archaeological objects from the excavations of the town that illustrate the evolution and history of the site from the Roman period to the end of the Middle Ages. The objects are grouped by different themes:
The villa in the High Empire, with examples of typically Roman ceramics and funerary inscriptions

The great late Roman villa: where objects related to the economic activities of the town are displayed: agricultural, livestock and crafts (carpentry and textiles) and metallurgical activities. Imported coins and objects show the trade of Veranes in the mercantile circuits of the late Roman period. Beliefs, leisure and daily life: objects of adornment and personal hygiene (rings, styling needles, brooches, buckles and fibulae, necklace beads), writing, games and hunting materials, and finally elements related to the architecture of the town, especially those made of iron.
The last space in the exhibition hall is occupied by pieces related to the transformation of the town in Late Antiquity and its passage into the Middle Ages.
Activities and services
The archaeological museums, including La Villa Romana de Veranes, develop an extensive programme of activities aimed at all audiences, including guided tours for groups (prior reservation), theatre, conferences on temporary exhibitions, educational programmes and holiday activities aimed at children, adults and families. In addition, this museum has services such as attention to people with disabilities with an accessible area, sale of publications, cloakroom, rental of spaces and parking.
Outreach activities
The Museum of the Roman Villa of Veranes offers families a wide range of activities, especially during the summer months. The most common, among many others, are dramatised visits and historical reenactment shows.
Educational Programs
The Archaeological Museums offer various activities aimed at the educational community of the council of Gijón/Xixón, organized by the Department of Education of the FMCE and UP , which are part of the Didactic Program on Archaeological Heritage and also offer the possibility for the centers to directly arrange the activities.
Publications
The study and research on the themes of the Archaeological Museums of Gijón, together with the holding of congresses, has led over the years to the publication of numerous works of various types that are classified by series of a scientific nature (Heritage Series), of a general nature (Monographs) or of an informative nature (Guides and Didactic Publications and Brochures).
Access allowed to pets, on a leash, in outdoor areas.

The Roman Villa of Veranes, known since ancient times as Torrexón de San Pedro, is located in the municipality of Gijón/Xixón, close to the ancient Roman route that connected these…

[20590
post-657362","poi","type-poi","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","poi_type-museums-and-places-to-interest-en
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.3 -
