It is a bronze piece 3.5 meters high, which symbolizes nature and vitality.

Chimenea de Poniente

On the esplanade of Poniente is the Chimney of the Wood Company of Demetrio Fernández Castrillón, documented since at least 1876, in this place that was the settlement of timber companies, among which was that of the Norwegian businessman Magnus Blikstad. This factory had a mechanical workshop for sawing and molding and a forge undoubtedly connected to the aforementioned chimney.

Railway Museum

The Railway Museum of Asturias opened its doors in 1998 and currently has one of the most important railway collections in Spain. It is dedicated to the conservation, research and dissemination of the industrial history of Asturias, whose backbone was the railway. The museum connects the history born with the Industrial Revolution with the present and thus acts as an important dynamic element of local and Asturian culture.

Poniente Accessible Beach Point (Alternative Route)

Accessible beach point for people with disabilities and/or reduced mobility on Poniente Beach. Equipped with all the necessary technical aids so that it can be used by people with disabilities and/or reduced mobility both in the enjoyment of the services of the equipment itself, and the technical aids necessary to swim in the sea. It has adapted changing rooms and toilets.

‘The Letronas’

The sculpture writes the name “Gijón” in solid steel, with the characteristic red colour of the city. It reproduces, on a large scale, the tourist brand that was launched in 2009. The site was looking for a central place or a walking area for locals and visitors. The sculpture measures between 3 and 3.5 metres and each of the four modules that frame the letters weighs two tonnes.

Queen’s Gardens

With its unmistakable palm trees reminiscent of India, the Jardines de la Reina are the obligatory stop between the marina and the main shopping street of the city, Corrida. Originally created as port service spaces with land reclaimed from the sea in front of the local docks, they received their name in 1900 on the occasion of a visit to the city by the Queen Regent María Cristina with her son Alfonso XIII.

Sculpture ‘Cider Tree’

This tree made up of 3,200 empty cider bottles (the equivalent of the annual glass consumption of 100 families) has a double function: aesthetics and awareness of recycling. The work, of almost eight tons, is illuminated at night.

Rock stairs

The rock stairs of Gijón/Xixón are one of those unique corners that are sometimes discovered in some cities. They were painted by the street artist Mossel on the White Night of 2012 and on their 41 steps appear the titles of the 50 best albums in the history of rock, according to Rolling Stone magazine.

Casa Paquet

Casa Paquet, built in Cimavilla in 1918, was a single-family house inspired by traditional models from the sixteenth century. It was designed by the architect Miguel García de la Cruz y Laviada (1887-1935) and is the best example of an urban palace of Renaissance inspiration in Asturias.

Pelayo Monument

Erected on 5 August 1891, it is a tribute to the first king of the Asturian Monarchy and the central figure of the coat of arms of Gijón/Xixón. The sculpture bears the Cross of Victory, symbol of Asturias. The design is the work of José María López.

Revillagigedo Palace

An emblematic building known as the Palace of the Count of Revillagigedo, the last owner of the building, it was built from a medieval tower in the eighteenth century. In 1991, together with the annexed Collegiate Church of San Juan Bautista, it became an International Art Centre. Its structure has been adapted to the needs of a dynamic cultural centre.

Pozo de la Barquera

Its name refers to the area used to beach boats before the construction of the pier. It was used between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries to make public the election of the council positions and they proceeded to the oath and the taking of possession of them before the people. In the same square, archaeological remains of an ancient Roman salting factory were found.

Main Square and Town Hall

In 1858, Andrés Coello designed the new Town Hall and the arcaded square that would link the historic centre with the new urban areas. In 1864 Coello’s project was modified by Luis Céspedes and Lucas María Palacios, introducing a decorative style that broke the classicist rigour in favour of a freer historicist interpretation.

Route along the promenade between Poniente and Fomento until it ends at the Plaza Mayor of the City of Gijón/Xixón (1.7km).
