It was built in 1260 by Diego de Valdés, Adelantado and Governor of Seville and is known as ‘the cathedral of the Romanesque of Gijón’. In the antique dealership in its portico there are remains of mural paintings and mosaics from the Roman villas of Veranes and Beloño. The old temple was partially destroyed in 1936 and its reconstruction was completed in the 1950s.
