Smart Tourist Destination
- GIJÓN/XIXÓN IN THE NETWORK OF SMART TOURIST DESTINATIONS
He December 21, 2020 Gijón/Xixón received accreditation as a Smart Tourist Destination, positively valuing the updating of the destination based on five strategic pillars: governance, innovation, technology, sustainability and accessibility.
In the first half of 2020, Segittur technicians held several meetings with the municipal areas of Tourism, Culture and Museums, Environment, IT, Innovation, Web Communication, EMULSA, Transparency, Sports, Education, Maintenance and Works, Social Services, Economic Promotion and employment. They also met with representatives of the hotel and hospitality sector, from the Smart City Chair Gijón/Xixón and the Chair Gijón/Xixón Sustainability, of the Congress Palace, with other business associations and municipal departments.
After the analysis, Segittur technicians concluded that Gijón/Xixón exceeded compliance with the DTI methodology. The city has obtained a score of over 82%. The sustainability axis is where the best results have been achieved, followed by technology, governance, innovation and accessibility.
Together with the diagnostic report carried out by SEGITTUR, an action plan has been delivered, in which a series of actions are proposed to improve the management of the destination within the framework of the DTI methodology, including the creation of a smart Tourist Destination management system, the development of an entrepreneurship program in tourism, the design of a digital tourist information office, as well as the launch of a sustainability table in tourism; and the promotion of accessibility in the private tourism sector. - THE NETWORK OF SMART TOURIST DESTINATIONS
The Network of Smart Tourist Destinations was established in February 2019 and was created with the following objectives:
1.- Promote the conversion of Spanish tourist destinations to smart destinations and their accession to the Network.
2.- Promote public-public and public-private collaboration in the development of products, services and actions of Smart Tourist Destinations.
3.- Contribute to guaranteeing Spain’s leadership in tourism intelligence through the actions carried out by the Network.
4.- Guarantee the quality and evolution of the DTI project.
The Network acts in areas with an internal focus, carrying out advisory actions in the application of the methodology and promoting the exchange of experiences and good practices among its members.

SEGITTUR together with the Network of Smart Tourist Destinations, has developed a Guide to good practices in digitalization for Smart Tourist Destinations.
This guide includes 50 good digital practices for a new generation of destinations and takes a tour of 56 tourist destinations in Spain and the world to address the challenges of digital transformation.

Augmented reality apps Gijón/Xixón have been selected in the category of adoption of new technologies in destinations for sustainable and self-sufficient management and digitalization as a tool to improve the dissemination of accessibility and management of destinations.

Segittur has published the Guide to the most outstanding actions in the destinations distinguished with the recognition of Smart Tourist Destination, a document for the preparation of which the good practices developed by the five destinations with an outstanding scope in achieving the objectives of the DTI methodology have been taken into account: Gijón/Xixón, Santander, Tenerife, Málaga and Benidorm.
The Guide includes the main actions carried out in Gijón/Xixón in terms of governance, innovation, technology, sustainability and accessibility that have led it to be a DTI certified destination.

Biosphere Gold Destination
Gijón/Xixón has certification Biosphere Gold Destination, awarded by the Institute of Responsible Tourism (ITR) and endorsed by UNESCO and the World Tourism Organization (WTO).
Since 2013, Gijón/Xixón began to be part of Biosphere Destination Community and has been demonstrating year after year its efforts and progress on the path towards continuous improvement, keeping in mind the principles of sustainable management in the environmental, economic, cultural and social spheres for making more responsible decisions towards your environment.
In 2019, motivated by the private sector involvement In the application of good sustainable practices, the city receives the “Gold” destination recognition, positioning itself as a tourist destination increasingly committed to sustainability.
This certification is based on the continuous evolution experienced by the city, taking into account its level of competitiveness, quality, differentiation, authenticity and satisfaction the commitment of all key tourism agents: public sector, companies and services, citizens and tourists, all in line with compliance with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and with a horizon 2030.

Q for Tourist Quality
Visita Gijón/Xixón It is currently certified with the Q for Tourist Quality. The areas that have this certification are:
+ Visita Gijón/Xixón, with the UNE 187007:2010 Tourism Boards standard (see certificate).
+ Infogijón, with the UNE-ISO 14785:2015 standard Tourist Information Offices. ESP-21-AUD-16 Tourism Quality Management Specification (see certificate).
+ Gijón Convention Bureau, with the UNE 187005:2009 Convention Bureaux standard (see certificate).
Under the requirements of these standards Visita Gijón/Xixón has created a management system based on quality parameters, which is reviewed annually by a certifying entity authorized by the ICTE (Institute for Spanish Tourism Quality) and independent, which reviews compliance with the standards and verifies that the entity works under the parameters of continuous improvement and the service standards set by the UNE and ISO standards leading to the Q mark.
In this way, Visita Gijón/Xixón seeks to lead the commitment to the quality of the destination, promoting the participation of tourism companies and services in the Comprehensive Tourism Quality System in Destinations national program in which Gijón/Xixón participating since 2004.
