La Escalerona

La Escalerona is one of the most famous public buildings in the city and a meeting point for the people of Gijón who come to San Lorenzo Beach.In 1933 the Gijón City Council refurbished the accesses to the San Lorenzo beach and commissioned the project to the municipal architect, José Avelino Díaz y Fernández Omaña, whose design is a tribute to the Modern Movement, which was in full force in European urban planning at the time.The restoration of the Escalerona, carried out in 2000 by Miguel Díaz Negrete, gave it its current renewed image.
