Gijón is located on the coastal pass of the Camino de Santiago, known as the ‘Camino del Norte’, along which there were hostels and hospitals for pilgrims. In Gijón, this work was carried out by the hospital of the pilgrims to Compostela or ‘corraxos’, whose origin seems to date back to the fifteenth century. The chapel of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios was linked to this hospital. Later it was renamed Hospital de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, maintaining its care function until 1836. Since 1940, the chapel has housed the remains of Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos.
