The sculpture is the work of José María López Rodríguez, it was installed in 1891 and represents Pelayo, founder of the Kingdom of Asturias in 818 and victor of the Battle of Covadonga in 822. The figure weighs four tons, is 2.80 meters high and, according to the press of the time, was made with the bronze of several cannons seized in the Second Moroccan War (1859-1860). Pelayo raises the Cross of Victory in his right hand and on his pedestal there is an inscription
