Muséu del Pueblu d’Asturies

The Muséu del Pueblu d’Asturies was created in 1968 on the initiative of the City Council of Gijón/Xixón and the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Navigation with the aim of preserving, studying and disseminating the memory of the Asturian people. The museum coordinates the Network of Ethnographic Museums of Asturias promoted by the Ministry of Culture of the Principality of Asturias to combine the efforts and resources of other similar museums.
 
The visit
The museum occupies a 35,000 m² wooded area and has a brackish water pond, reminiscent of the marsh that once dominated the mouth of the Piles River. This site is a pleasant leisure space in which both the museum and the public organise various celebrations. The collections are presented to the public in several buildings, some of which, such as the mansions, the cider mill, the granaries and the bread baskets, constitute in themselves a part of the exhibition.

The collection
The museum’s collection includes tangible and intangible testimonies and covers very broad contents, so it is organised into five areas: museographic, musical, photographic, documentation, oral. A selection of pieces can be seen in the Digital Network of Collections of the Museum of Spain.
Museum area
It is made up of objects representative of everyday life produced throughout the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth, among which those related to domestic equipment, agriculture and livestock, traditional trades, leisure and popular religiosity should be highlighted.
 
Music Area
It includes the collections of a musical nature exhibited to the public in the Bagpipe Museum and distributed in four blocks: bagpipes of the world, Asturian bagpipes, traditional Asturian instruments and industrially produced sonors, as well as the scores and commercial recordings of Asturian music in different media.
Photographic area
More than one million photographs and postcards from the archives of professional and amateur photographers, researchers, newspapers and family albums available through the Municipal Photo Library. With a digital repository where the photographic collections can be seen and consulted.
 
Documentation area
It includes the archives of personal documents (correspondence and memoirs), of companies and shops; the graphic collection (posters, labels, engravings); the cartographic collection and the collection of periodicals. This area provides researchers and users in general with a library specialising in history and anthropology. Discover some of the available collections.
 
Oral memory
The museum is the headquarters of the Oral History Archive of Asturias, which promotes the collection, conservation and dissemination of the oral heritage of Asturias in order to disseminate the information preserved in the memory and experience of the protagonists of our recent past.

Services and Activities
The museum develops an extensive annual programme of activities aimed at all audiences that includes guided tours, courses, educational workshops and holiday camps, as well as festive and cultural events related to traditional Asturian society and organised in collaboration with citizens through Gijón and Asturian entities and associations.
Access allowed to pets, on a leash, in outdoor areas.
