Smart Tourist Destination

HeDecember 21, 2020 Gijón/Xixón received accreditation as a Smart Tourist Destination, positively valuing the updating of the destination based on five strategic pillars: governance, innovation, technology, sustainability and accessibility.

In the first half of 2020, Segittur technicians held several meetings with the municipal areas of Tourism, Culture and Museums, Environment, IT, Innovation, Web Communication, EMULSA, Transparency, Sports, Education, Maintenance and Works, Social Services, Economic Promotion and employment. They also met with representatives of the hotel and hospitality sector, from the Smart City ChairGijón/Xixónand the ChairGijón/Xixón Sustainability, of the Congress Palace, with other business associations and municipal departments.

After the analysis, Segittur technicians concluded thatGijón/Xixónexceeded compliance with the DTI methodology. The city has obtained a score of over 82%. The sustainability axis is where the best results have been achieved, followed by technology, governance, innovation and accessibility.

Together with the diagnostic report carried out by SEGITTUR, an action plan has been delivered, in which a series of actions are proposed to improve the management of the destination within the framework of the DTI methodology, including the creation of a smart Tourist Destination management system, the development of an entrepreneurship program in tourism, the design of a digital tourist information office, as well as the launch of a sustainability table in tourism; and the promotion of accessibility in the private tourism sector. TheNetwork of Smart Tourist Destinationswas established in February 2019 and was created with the following objectives:

1.- Promote the conversion of Spanish tourist destinations to smart destinations and their accession to the Network.

2.- Promote public-public and public-private collaboration in the development of products, services and actions of Smart Tourist Destinations.

3.- Contribute to guaranteeing Spain’s leadership in tourism intelligence through the actions carried out by the Network.

4.- Guarantee the quality and evolution of the DTI project.

The Network acts in areas with an internal focus, carrying out advisory actions in the application of the methodology and promoting the exchange of experiences and good practices among its members.

SEGITTURtogether with the Network of Smart Tourist Destinations, has developed a Guide to good practices in digitalization for Smart Tourist Destinations.

This guide includes 50 good digital practices for a new generation of destinations and takes a tour of 56 tourist destinations in Spain and the world to address the challenges of digital transformation.

Segittur has published the Guide to the most outstanding actions in the destinations distinguished with the recognition of Smart Tourist Destination, a document for the preparation of which the good practices developed by the five destinations with an outstanding scope in achieving the objectives of the DTI methodology have been taken into account: Gijón/Xixón, Santander, Tenerife, Málaga and Benidorm.

The Guide includes the main actions carried out in Gijón/Xixón in terms of governance, innovation, technology, sustainability and accessibility that have led it to be a DTI-certified destination.
