Installed since 1991 in the refurbished building of the former Bank of Spain in Gijón. It has a collection of 200,000 documents (80,000 of them freely accessible) for consultation or loan in all types of media, a room with daily newspapers and a wide selection of current magazines and Wi-Fi access throughout the building. Among its heritage it has an important collection of works from before 1900 and preserves a large part of the library of the Ateneo Obrero de Gijón. It also houses the Asturian Library of Padre Patac, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 2012. It was also the headquarters of the old Jovellanos Theatre, where the first film screening was held in Gijón on 12 August 1896. A plaque at the entrance of the building reminds us of this fact.
