Paseo de Begoña

In the heart of Gijón/Xixón, the Paseo de Begoña is a landscaped pedestrian space, with rest areas and the characteristic kiosk or music pavilion.
Its position is especially interesting: it is halfway between the historic Gijón/Xixón and the expansion that made the city grow to the east and south during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
The name comes from the Virgin of Begoña and an old chapel, but the place we know today as a promenade is the result, above all, of the growth of Gijón/Xixón in the nineteenth century. In 1849 work began to prepare the land and in 1857, following a project by the master builder Cándido González, the first urbanization properly speaking as a promenade was carried out. The City Council conceived it as a green space for walking, recreation and social life.
In addition, the Paseo de Begoña is a magnificent showcase of Gijón’s architecture of the late nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century.
